Celebrate Hudson

Building Connections

The Armory on the Assabet will foster community connections among residents of Hudson and surrounding communities with shared interests by welcoming historical and veterans groups and supporting local youth, senior citizens and cultural organizations. This will promote the building’s history and provide a meeting place.

Unleash Your Creativity

Through strategic partnerships, the iconic Armory building offers a variety of events and workshops catering to the interests of children, youth, adults and seniors. Workshops may include pottery with a community kiln, visual art studios, music lessons, photography, podcasting, and decorative arts.

Experiences to Remember

Built by Fenway Park’s architect James E. McLaughlin, the Armory building has served as a military facility, dance hall, voting site, and training center, and the Armory on the Assabet will showcase its history through public exhibitions of historical resources and artifacts.

Celebrate Community

With an open floor plan and outdoor event areas along the river, the Armory on the Assabet will host a variety of public events. Examples may include Farmer’s markets, library book sales and other gatherings that will take advantage of the unique space.

FAQ

Common Questions

Who is coordinating the Project?

The Armory on the Assabet’s purchasing, fundraising, renovation, programming and eventual operations are being run by the Hudson Cultural Alliance, a non-profit dedicated to preserving the town’s history while driving arts and culture forward.

How is this project being funded?

The purchase of the building was funded by an earmark from Senator Jamie Eldridge and Representative Kate Hogan. We have received 2 matching grants from the Mass Cultural Council and other grant sources.. Additional funding is coming through fundraising efforts with Hudson’s Business Improvement District, local organizations, businesses, restaurants, and individuals.

Where is the funding being used?

Funding was used to purchase the building from the Commonwealth. Other sources of funding have been used for architectural study including hiring an architect and developing plans to bring the building up to safety and accessibility codes leading to the first steps of design development.. Additionally, funding has been used to provide an operational structure consisting of a strategic plan, feasibility study, business plan and marketing. Lastly, funds have provided limited programming taking place on the Armory grounds.

Is my donation tax exempt?

The Internal Revenue Service allows for individual retirement arrangement (IRA) owners age 70½ or over transfers of up to $100,000 to charities tax-free each year.

In addition, IRA owners 72 and older may donate their Required Minimum Distribution tax free.

These transfers, known as qualified charitable distributions or QCDs, offer eligible older Americans a great way to easily give to charity before the end of the year.

Normally, distributions from a traditional IRA are taxable when received. With a QCD, however, these distributions become tax-free as long as they're paid directly from the IRA to an eligible charitable organization.

For more information please go to the IRS website.
